Volunteering

One way to profoundly help others is by doing voluntary work for the Organisation. Some volunteers can only give an hour of their time a week, whilst others are able to give a lot more. You can volunteer completely anonymously (if you choose, you can ask to have your name left off our 'Who's Who in the Office' page). Alternatively being a volunteer can bring you into the spotlight, making you a star in the world of improving mental health services!:

We are proud to have Gareth Richards, the 2006 winner of the Welsh Volunteer of the Year Award, doing Outreach work in hospitals in Carmarthen on our PLUS programme.

There are many ways to volunteer:
  • You can come and help out in the office in Newport.  There are many things we would welcome your help with: answering the help-line; assembling the information we send out to callers (including our introductory 'Basic Packs'); and all sorts of office work - depending on your choices and skill levels. Please contact us for more information.
  • You can join a self-help group (or help set a new one up, if there are enough people who are interested in joining one in your area). The facilitators of our existing self-help groups would be glad of your help with running the group.
  • You can do Outreach work in hospitals, talking to newly-diagnosed people, and people in crisis (this is not for everyone, as it can be very emotionally demanding). We already have one very well-established Outreach Programme in Carmarthen, called PLUS (People Like Us Survive). Click here for more information on PLUS.
  • There are countless other ways to volunteer and help us. If you have any ideas, please contact us to discuss how we can help you help us.
  • At some point in the future, we plan to launch e-volunteering - where you can work for us from your home (providing you have a computer and an internet connection), please contact us for more information.
